Now this weeks question:
What is the saddest book you have read?
I admit, I am not prone to reading sad or depressing books. As I matter of fact, I usually steer clear of them. I read for pleasure and the last thing I want is to have my heart torn out.
The first time a book broke my heart happened when I was five 
years old. My mother used to read aloud to us every night. The book we were reading was Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. I
loved this book right up until the end, when Charlotte the spider dies. I certainly at five years old, was not prepared for that kind of heart break. I recall waking up in the middle of the night bawling my eyes out. When my mom rushed into my room and asked what was the matter...All I could blubber was, "Charlotte's dead..." I am sure if I tried to read this book today, I would still get a lump in my throat.
Fast Forward a few years later, eight years old, third grade. My teacher decides to read to us, Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. Another book that will absolutely destroy you if you are an animal lover. I knew I was in big trouble when my teacher couldn't even finish reading the end to us, she was crying, the other teacher had to take over. Talk about traumatic. I remember afterwards just wandering around on the playground at recess feeling sick.
High school brought many sad books, To Kill a Mockingbird, Les 
Miserables, Frankenstein (yes believe it or not this book is very sad) but the one that sticks with me is Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. A touching and heart wrenching tale of the the ultimate sacrificial love courtesy of Madame Guillotine. This is one you need to read. Especially if you are a fan of Cassandra Clare's Infernal Devices.
Recently, I finished Cynthia Hand's Hallowed. It was a beautiful, yet highly emotional walk through losing someone you love. Ms. Hand captures the most perfect and poignant emotions in her book. This is definitely one you need to read.
Finally, I am finishing up The Hunger Games, I admit I have been dragging my feet to
finish because I know this book is going to tear my heart out. I hope I am wrong but I know it is coming.
Two books that are on my horizon, The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein and The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I am putting them off for the right time, maybe a nice sunny day. Afterwards I will need to read something light and funny any suggestions? I will honestly say, the biggest tear jerker books for me, involve animals. Breaks my heart every time!
