Final discussion questions
1. Heven develops a new “supernatural power”. She remarks that it isn’t that exciting of a power. Is this a power you would like to have, if not what kind of supernatural power would you like to have?
I would certainly like to be able to see auras. I think an aura can show a person's true colors, if you will. It is certainly not something you can hide if your aura reflects a darker nature. I certainly found it interesting when Kimber's colors were revealed. It would make it a lot easier to determine someone's true intentions, kind of like dogs sniffing each others rear ends.
2. Which character do you think makes the biggest internal change throughout the course of this book? Is there a situation in your life that you can reflect back on as an experience that changed your life for the better?
I think Heven undergoes the biggest internal and of course, external changes. When the book opens she is a pale shadow of her former self, always hiding behind her hoodie and hair. She is terrified of her shadow, but as the story progresses, with Sam's help she accepts her scars and realizes that she is still the same beautiful person she always was. As far as for my own personal growth, one of the most difficult changes was leaving Phoenix. I moved there right after college and built a life. After ten years my husband was presented with an opportunity to transfer to Portland, Oregon. I dragged my feet and didn't want to move. Someone
was looking out for us, though because the plant in Phoenix where he worked ended up shutting down after we left. The
move was challenging to say the least but the other best part was that within three months after our move, I was pregnant. We had tried for four years and were about to give up and then out of the blue...well needless to say here we are five years and two kids later...it definitely was a life changing experience that worked out for the better.
3. Who is your favorite character and why?
My favorite character is Gran. I loved how she is so accepting of Heven and non judgmental. Her door is always open no questions asked, and you are welcomed with a hot meal and smile. I think I gravitated toward Heven's grandma because it brought back such pleasant memories of my own Grandparents. Their doors were always open and I can recall numerous occasions escaping to the warm confines of their homes to nurse a broken heart or a wound. Time spent with my gentle
Grandpa whose entire face lit up when I walked into the room was a soothing balm, not to mention my grandma's expert cooking. How I miss them!
4. When the book ends the reader has an idea of what the next book will involve. Do you think the book ended in the appropriate place?
Yes, I thought the book ended appropriately. I appreciated that it avoided the dreadful cliffhanger. Anyone who regularly reads my reviews knows how much I detest cliffhangers. This book tied off all the major story lines while leaving just a few dangling threads to continue into the next book. I really liked that I wasn't left with any terrible burning questions. I am most excited for the series to move to Italy. I can't wait to see what is in store for Heven and Sam in Charade.
5. Do you have any predictions for the next book in the series, Charade?
Wow, do I have any predictions, probably not. Masquerade caught me off guard several times. I can only imagine what Ms. Hebert has up her sleeve for the next installment, this time I will expect the unexpected. I anticipate some kind of a confrontation with Kimber and Heven. After Kimber's drunken confession and by the color of her aura there is definitely a storm brewing over their friendship. I am wondering what will happen with Heven's mom will she continue her Bible thumping mania and taking her aggression out on chicken, or will she get a grip and have a shot of whiskey or something and join reality. Whatever the case I am sure I am in for another roller coaster reading adventure!
6. Did you enjoy participating in this read along? Will you join in future read alongs?
I think read alongs have become my new addiction. I love reading and discussing books with many bloggers. I enjoy seeing how twenty different people answer the same question, sometimes we are in agreement and other times the answers are all over the map. I also love meeting new bloggers and hope that many of you will keep in touch. One of my favorite aspects of this particular read along was having the author, Cambria Hebert join in and participate every week. I loved hearing the author's perspective, of course, she remained a little too tight lipped on certain topics, perhaps we should have bribed her to spill it with chocolate and Starbuck's or sent a flock of chicken's to her house....ok that is a cruel...anyway I had a fabulous time as always. I am looking forward to participating in the upcoming
Charade Tour which kicks off in May. For you read along junkies, like myself, there is another read along coming up in June for Married with Zombies and I am currently helping to organize one in August for Darynda Jones' First Grave on the Right. Hope to see some of you back for these! Make sure you stop by Cambria's blog next week for a special wrap up and the prize winners announcement. Thanks so much for being a part of this read a long. Hope you had fun!
See you all at the next read along in June, if not before then!
